challenger bowling
Our Challenger Sunshine bowlers bowl every Saturday at
Allie Brandt’s in Lockport for 30 weeks between September
and April. Everyone bowls two games. Each player is assigned
to an alley. Each player receives a bowling shirt and is
assigned to a team. Volunteers help guide and mentor the
safety and fun of all bowlers at the games.
For the 2007-08 season, bowlers have a choice of bowling from
3-4:30PM or from 4-6:30 PM. The cost of bowling is $3.00 per week and bowlers receive 2
games of bowling, free use of shoes and ball, and one slice of pizza and
one glass of pop.
bowling volunteers
Team Parents and supporters
An important part of the Challenger
Sports program are the volunteers and Team
Parents that help organize the teams. The
volunteers keep the flow of the game going. The
volunteers are assigned to each team to help with
communication, scheduling, pictures and volunteer
management within their respective team families.
bowling buddies
Bowling Buddy’s are volunteers that help their
challenged partners by acting as guides for blind
children, by helping wheelchair-bound players bowl.
A Buddy's job is simply to be a friend, engage the
player in conversation, if possible; help him/her
roll and help position them if needed to get the
ball down the alley for a strike, keep the players
attention on the game and make sure that the players
are safe and no one gets hurt. This becomes a
rewarding experience for both the player and the Buddy. The
Bowling Buddy’s program allows the parents to receive a much
deserved break and cheer the players from the sidelines. We
ask that Bowling Buddy’s arrive 15 minutes before the games,
which are expected to last approximately 1- 1 1/2 hours .
equipment
Allie Brant bowling alleys provide The Challenger Sunshine
bowlers with shoes and bowling balls if needed although
many players prefer to purchase a bowling ball and shoes
so they can assure a good fit. A player will receive a
shirt during the bowling season.
where we play
Challenger Sunshine bowling games will be played at
Allie Brandt's Bowling Alley on Lincoln Ave. in Lockport.
please arrive early
We encourage you to arrive at the bowling alley at
least 10 minutes before the game to allow you sometime
to get organized. As soon as you arrive, players should
check in with leaders to find out what alley the player
will be bowling at.
rolling the ball
One of the goals of the Challenger program is to be
as flexible as possible in order to make the experience
a positive one for each player. Some of our athletes in
the league bowl from a specially made stand that the ball
sits on and with a little push and aim the ball will roll
down the ally and hit the pins. The rest of the bowlers give
it there best shot and roll the ball down the alley. However,
we try to accommodate to each players skill level and encourage
players to bowl in the way they feel most comfortable. Players
whose arm or hand strength prevents them from holding a bowling
ball will have help from there assigned volunteer. Bumper bowling
is a possibility for those learning to bowl.
it's OK not to play
As mentioned previously, we try to be
very flexible and there is never pressure
for the players to participate. We realize
there are times when children are tired or
upset and we want you to feel comfortable
making the decision about an individual’s
level of participation. Please let your
coaches and your assigned buddy know how they
can be helpful in these situations—when to be
encouraging and when to back off.
